Frequently Asked Questions

What is Body Surface Area (BSA) and why is it important?
BSA is the measured or calculated surface area of a human body. It's crucial in medicine for calculating drug dosages, especially for chemotherapy, determining cardiac index, and assessing burn severity. BSA provides a more accurate dosing parameter than body weight alone.
Which BSA formula should I use?
The Mosteller formula is most widely recommended for clinical practice due to its simplicity and accuracy. It's the default in most medical software. The DuBois and Haycock formulas are also valid, and choosing "All Formulas" gives you the average of all three for comparison.
What is a normal BSA for adults?
Average adult BSA is approximately 1.7-1.9 m² (1.73 m² is the standard reference). Men typically have higher BSA (1.9 m²) than women (1.6 m²). BSA varies with height and weight, ranging from about 1.0 m² for small children to 2.5+ m² for very large adults.
How is BSA used in chemotherapy dosing?
Most chemotherapy drugs are dosed based on BSA (mg/m²) because drug clearance correlates better with BSA than with body weight alone. This reduces toxicity in smaller patients and ensures adequate dosing in larger patients. Your oncologist calculates your specific dose using your BSA.
